Silver melt value is fine-silver weight multiplied by a chosen reference price. It is useful for estimating contained metal. It is not automatically a dealer bid, refinery settlement, retail price, antique appraisal or numismatic valuation.
A silver seller needs to make several facts credible: what the item is, how much it weighs, how fine it is, whether the seller can transfer it and whether it can be delivered into the intended market. Historical or artistic identity becomes a fifth essential fact when the object may be worth more than melt.

One troy ounce equals exactly 31.1034768 grams. A troy ounce is heavier than the ordinary ounce used for many household goods, and twelve troy ounces make a troy pound rather than sixteen.

Standards and marks vary by jurisdiction and period. A bare number is a fineness claim, not a complete account of maker, assay office, date or value.
A tray of flatware may contain forks and spoons made mainly from one silver alloy, knives with non-silver blades and filled handles, and repaired pieces with solder. Weighted candlesticks or hollowware can contain cement or other filling. Jewelry may include stones, clasps or parts of another composition.
Separate categories before weighing. Sterling, 800-fine ware, plated material, weighted objects, knives, jewelry and coins should not be thrown into one total and assigned a single purity.

Testing can include marks, dimensions, density, magnets, electrical instruments, acid tests, X-ray fluorescence, ultrasonic methods and destructive assay. Each has limits. XRF primarily reads near-surface composition, while a destructive method requires a representative sample. Large or heterogeneous lots make careful sampling especially important.
A credible mark improves confidence but does not make inspection unnecessary. Hallmarks historically attached responsibility to makers, sponsors and assay offices; they did not make every object equal or guarantee a particular market price.
