Copper does not have one universal retail price. Market quotations usually describe a defined grade, delivery location, contract and unit. A local scrap payment also reflects the material's grade, recoverable copper, preparation, volume and the buyer's costs.
What does a copper price mean?
A copper quotation is useful only when its basis is known. Exchange-traded copper contracts generally refer to standardized refined metal rather than an unsorted pipe, cable or appliance. The quoted number may be a cash price, a futures price, a settlement, a bid, an ask or a delayed informational value.
In US-facing coverage, copper is often discussed in US dollars per avoirdupois pound. International physical and exchange markets also use currency per metric tonne. Those units can describe the same price basis after conversion, but they do not make unlike grades or delivery terms equivalent.

If P is the price per pound, the equivalent price per kilogram is P × 2.2046226218 and the price per metric tonne is P × 2,204.6226218. Copper is normally weighed with the avoirdupois system; the 31.1034768 gram troy ounce used for precious metals is a different unit.

Refined copper, products and scrap are different markets
Refined cathode is a standardized industrial input. Rod, wire, tube and sheet include fabrication, logistics and commercial margins. Decorative bars and rounds may carry retail premiums unrelated to copper's raw-metal value. Scrap is secondary material whose price depends on what can actually be recovered from it.

Copper scrap grades are commercial descriptions
Labels such as bare bright, No. 1 copper, No. 2 copper and insulated copper wire are widely used, but acceptance rules can vary between buyers and regions. A grade name is not a universal promise of a fixed copper percentage. Coatings, solder, attachments, corrosion, insulation and mixed metals can move material into a lower category.
Ask a buyer for the written grade, unit price, net accepted weight and deductions. Compare like with like: a price per gross pound of insulated cable cannot be compared directly with a refined-copper quotation per pound without estimating the cable's recoverable copper.
How to estimate copper value
For a simple contained-metal model:
Benchmark value = gross weight in lb × estimated copper fraction × reference price per lb Modeled offer = benchmark value × payout percentageThe copper fraction and payout percentage represent different ideas. The first estimates how much of the object's weight is copper. The second models the share of its benchmark value paid after recovery risk, preparation, transport, processing and margin. Neither replaces an assay, a buyer's grade sheet or an actual quote.
