Silver melt value formula
The calculation first converts the item weight into grams. It then applies fineness, converts the troy-ounce reference to a price per gram and multiplies.

Assume 100 grams is the net weight of a homogeneous sterling alloy, the 925 claim is accurate and the hypothetical reference price is USD 30 per troy ounce.
- Fine silver: 100 g × 0.925 = 92.5 g.
- Fine silver in troy ounces: 92.5 ÷ 31.1034768 = about 2.97394 ozt.
- Reference melt value: 2.97394 × USD 30 = about USD 89.22.
This result does not prove that a 100 gram object contains 100 grams of sterling alloy. A weighted handle, non-silver blade, stones, solder, repair or false mark changes the usable input.
Choosing the silver purity

Labels such as "coin silver" do not establish one universal percentage for every place and period. Identify the particular standard or obtain a credible test instead of guessing. A bare 925 stamp is a fineness claim, not automatically a complete legally recognized hallmark.
Use net silver-bearing weight, not an indiscriminate total
Separate lots before weighing and calculation. Sterling, 800-fine ware, plated material, weighted candlesticks, knives with non-silver blades, jewelry and coins are not one uniform material.
- Flatware: handles and blades may not share the same composition.
- Weighted hollowware: cement or another filling can make gross weight much greater than silver weight.
- Jewelry: stones, clasps and other components may need separate treatment.
- Plate: a thin silver surface does not justify applying solid-silver fineness to the base-metal core.
- Coins: exact identity may reveal a specific silver standard or a collectible value above melt.
Melt value versus a real silver offer
Melt value is a calculation. A real buyer may need to test, sort, sample, aggregate, ship and refine the material while carrying price and fraud risk. A refinery settlement can include recovery assumptions, treatment charges and delay. A dealer buyback can retain product premium when a recognized coin or bar has active resale demand.
At the same time, antique silverware, a known maker, a complete service or a rare coin can be worth more than metal. Classification should happen before the object is placed into a scrap stream.
Using the payout field responsibly
Entering 90% models a payout equal to 90% of calculated melt. It does not establish whether 90% is fair. Real terms may combine percentage deductions and fixed costs, and buyers can use different assay results or price-lock times.
Ask for the tested weight, fineness, price source, pricing moment, fees and final payment in writing. Compare multiple net outcomes under the same assumptions.
Calculator limits
- It cannot authenticate a bar, coin, object or hallmark.
